America the Beautiful

My oldest daughter called from Washington, D.C., this morning at about 7:15 a.m. “We made it!” she screamed. “We made it into the city. You can’t believe it. So many people. I sat next to a guy on the metro who came here from Ghana just for this! It’s amazing. This is the happiest place ever!”

It’s a new day, America. We can all be proud. And hopeful.

We are all immigrants…

How soon so many have forgotten.

The New York Times writes in an editorial today: “If Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona is confirmed as homeland security secretary, she will leave behind a state in full Republican control, with immigration zealots embedded in both houses of the Legislature, and not enough moderates to go around. That is the down side of President-elect Barack Obama’s decision to bring Ms. Napolitano to Washington. For years, she has been the most powerful voice of reason in a state that continues to hatch some of the dumbest, cruelest ideas anywhere for getting tough on immigrants.”

Washington, 20 Nov. (AKI) – United States president-elect Barack Obama is eyeing the western state of Arizona’s governor and rising Democratic star, Janet Napolitano, as his Secretary of Homeland Security, according to Democratic Party sources quoted on Thursday by the Washington Post newspaper. Napolitano, 50 was an early supporter of Obama and won accolades from fellow governors for her handling of immigration issues, the paper said.
